New UPI Rules from August 2025: Limits, Changes, and How They Affect You

New UPI Rules from 1 August 2025 – Everything You Need to Know

UPI (Unified Payments Interface) has become a part of our daily life. From paying at tea stalls to sending money to friends, most of us rely on apps like PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, BHIM and others.

But from 1 August 2025, some new rules for UPI users have started. These changes have been introduced by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to reduce system load, avoid failed transactions, and make UPI safer.

Don’t worry—UPI is still free for you, but now you need to be a little smarter about how you use it.

Why the Rules Were Changed

  • UPI is now used for billions of transactions every month.

  • Many users repeatedly check balances or transaction status, which increases server load.

  • Autopay mandates like EMIs and subscriptions often crowd the system during peak hours.

These new rules reduce pressure on servers, speed up transactions, and improve reliability.

Key Changes in UPI from 1 August 2025

Here are the important rules in simple words:

1️⃣ Limit on Bank Balance Check

  • Earlier: You could refresh your bank balance anytime, unlimited times.

  • Now: Maximum 50 times per day per app.

  • Why: To stop unnecessary load.

  • Tip: After every payment, apps automatically show updated balance—so no need to refresh manually often.

2️⃣ Limit on Viewing Linked Bank Accounts

  • Every UPI app lets you see your linked bank accounts.

  • New rule: You can open this list 25 times per day only.

  • Why: To prevent server overload and misuse.

3️⃣ Autopay (Recurring Payments) in Off-Peak Hours

  • Payments like OTT subscriptions, EMIs, insurance premiums, electricity bills are processed as autopay mandates.

  • Now: These payments will mostly happen in non‑peak hours:

    • Before 10 AM

    • Between 1 PM to 5 PM

    • After 9:30 PM

  • Benefit: Regular payments are smoother, and instant payments don’t get delayed during peak hours.

4️⃣ Failed Autopay Retry Limit

  • If an autopay fails (for example, due to low balance), the app will try maximum 4 times (1 original + 3 retries).

  • Why: To reduce repeated failed attempts that slow down the system.

5️⃣ Pending Transaction Status Check

  • If a payment is “Pending”, you can check its status only:

    • 3 times per transaction

    • Minimum 90 seconds gap between checks

  • Why: To prevent repeated server hits and reduce delays.

6️⃣ No Charges for Normal Users

  • Good news:

    • Sending money ✅ Free

    • Receiving money ✅ Free

    • Paying shops ✅ Free

  • Who pays? Payment apps will pay small charges to banks, not you or the shopkeepers.

 What You Should Do

  1. Don’t refresh balance repeatedly – let the app auto-update.

  2. Plan autopay mandates – they may process early morning, afternoon, or late night.

  3. Be patient with pending transactions – avoid hitting refresh multiple times.

  4. Update your UPI app to enjoy smooth service.
